'During my career as a sculptor, I have had the opportunity to work with a variety of institutions and individuals on art works that have been commissioned for specific places. Commissioned works of art place the artist in a position that is very much like any service or business in which one provides for the needs and functions of others. The creation of a commissioned work is in some ways a collaborative creation between the artist and the client and therefore presents unique opportunities that the artist would not normally in his his studio work.
I have found that the balance between studio art works, which I created for exhibition, and commissioned works has been mutually supportive as ideas, information and techniques are discovered and transferred. I have also found that each of these activities have an independence that give the sense of separation or distinction. In many respects, the studio art is the foundation for commissioned work since the studio work is a continuous activity in which new directions are explored.
During my early years as a studio art teacher/professor of sculpture, my commission work allowed me to introduce a variety of materials and techniques to my students, the very materials and techniques I was exploring in my own work.'
